SEPTEMBER GUILD MEETING

Another great guild meeting! We welcomed a new member to our group, Velma Tauriainen. Welcome Velma! We also enjoyed visiting we Dana's mother-in-law, Louis, who is visiting from New York. She shared a couple of her beautiful quilts with us. You can see them in the Show and Tell video, along with all the other wonder show and tell projects, compliments of Linda Pheffer.

Here's what went on:

Saturday's Sew-In will be 10 am at the library. Bring a project of your choice to work on, a snack to share or just come to visit! Everyone is welcome!
The 5" square exchange color for October is ORANGE!
Next month bring copies of your favorite pattern to share with the group! About 10 or so copies if you can.
Janice brought in approx. 27 totes for the Newborns in Need and other items. Way to go Janice!!!!
Janice demostrated how to make a 3 dimensional folded bow tie block and showed us a quilt she made years back using the blocks. Very adorable!
Gadjets: Janice showed us the many uses of Flexicon pens for marking our quilts.
Loretta passed out an instruction sheet on how to apply a quilt sleeve to the backs of quilts you want to hang on the wall.
Linda reported that the Pregnancy Resource Center in Owasso would like to obtain a queen sized quilt for their December fundraiser. Linda did not commit us to making such a quilt but if anyone would like to take on the task, they are welcome to do so.

QUILTING TIPS:

CAUTION: When making a baby quilt ALWAYS use 100% cotton!!! Polyester or polyester blend batting can melt if comes near a high heat source long enough and if baby is wrapped up in it can burn their precious little skin.

Today I watched a Webinar from HandiQuilter (I quilt on a HQ16) and even though longarm's and domestic machine are not alike there were a few tips that are helpful for both. Here they are:

Needles:

1) When inserting needles into your machine be sure you have it all the way to the top and eye is centered in front. One way to do this is to insert a pin into the needles eye to help you lift and center the needle in place.

2) Make sure you use the right needle for the thread you use. If using a heavier thread you may need to use a 14 or even 16 size in your machine to accomodate.

Threads:

1) Think opposites: the higher the weight of the thread the finer it is!! The lower the weight the heavier.

19 weight come in polyester and cotton and shows up better on quilting. 40 weight (rayon's) are best for embroidery machines. 60 weight thread is very thin for finer work.

2) Here's a cool trick! If you want to use a very decorative, bulky, thread on a quilt, wind it around a bobbin. Not to tight, not to loose. Baste lines through your quilt where you want this decorative thread to go and then flip your quilt over and sew. This will put the bobbin thread on top where your want it.

Bobbins:

1) If you wind to loose your stitches will be snarled and tangled.

2) If you wind to tight you can cause the bobbin to extend out the sides and ruin the bobbin. These can stick in the bobbin case and cause uneven stitching. Throw those suckers away!

Tension:

1) Remember in setting the proper tension consider the weight of the thread.

2) Turning the tension knob; Righty tighty, Lefty loosey!
